Name: Reem Abouemera

City: Cairo, Egypt

How long have you been writing?: I’ve been a writer long before I actually knew what writing was. I remember when I was in second grade (I was around 8 years old) and I wrote cartoon episodes for my favorite TV series, like “Arthur”! I’d do it just for fun, lying down on my bed with a notebook and a pencil. I think that’s when the love affair started.

Why did you become a writer?: Out of my love for reading. Growing up, I was an avid reader (I literally never found enough time to read all the books I wanted to), and that’s what drove me to start writing myself. I wanted to create stories that people could get lost in, the way I did when reading. Add to that my belief in life-long learning—and my need to keep challenging myself— and you have the perfect recipe for a writer.

What verticals do you write about?: That’s a tough question. Just like how unconstrained writing can be, I’m just as limitless when it comes to the topics I write about—from business and marketing to psychology, wedding planning, and everything in between.

What is a favorite article you have written in your career?: That would have to be the very first article that went live with my byline. It’s my favorite not because of the topic or the writing itself (though I’m proud of both), but because it’s a physical embodiment of my dream. To this day, every time I see that piece, it reminds me of how I felt when it first went up. I remember being so nervous but also feeling like I had finally arrived as a writer.

What is a hobby or something fun about you?: It’s not fun for everyone, but I love organizing things. I get a weird sense of satisfaction from creating order out of chaos, whether that’s my physical space or my schedule. I’m also a huge movie buff.
